As I was just looking for some good plugin to enhance my contact page as well as organize my leads, I promptly decided to give it a go.

This post described my whole experience of the plugin installation and customization.

The steps are as follows:

1. Create a Trial Account at SalesForce

(to test things out)

2. Upload and activate the plugin

(as an avid Wordpress user, you are likely to be familiar with the process).

3. Configure the plugin:

3.1. Basic settings: Customize status messages displayed after the message is sent or if there was an error:

3.2. Connect to your Salesforce account by providing your company ID (located in your Salesforce.com account, go to Setup » Company Profile » Company Information):

3.3. Customize the form settings: the form phrases and look:

3.4. Customize the form fields:

Specify which fields you want the customer to complete;

Select the required fields;

Specify the type of each field;

Set the field order:

4. Use the form

To use this form, copy the following shortcode into a post or page:

Additionally you can use the sidebar widget to have the form blog-wide (this is where I am having it now as I am testing it so far):

Here’s how the plugin looks when added to the sidebar:

The whole process just over-viewed above is clearly described in this video as well.

5. Enjoy the service

Now I should be able to:

Track all conversations and interactions

Organize your contacts and tasks in a single spot

Easily synch with Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo!, and more

Which tools are you using to organize your leads?

If you want to find new blogging friends and exchange cool guest posts like the one below, join MyBlogGuest

A couple of recent guest posts here on SEO Smarty have covered the topic of the more, ahem, mature web surfers. Hal Brown in particular raised a laugh from me when ending his post with, “Us old farts may look stupid to youngsters, but consider how you look to us.” Good point!

But all this talk of the sixty something surfers got me thinking of my wonderful Nan. She doesn’t use the Internet – in fact I’m not even sure she knows what it is really. Let me offer a little insight into the ‘Internet According to Nan.’

Very Intelligent Men Live in Computers

A number of years ago, search engine ‘Ask Jeeves’ (ask.com) ran a series of TV ads here in the UK. They invited British surfers to go online and ask a rather well dressed cartoon butler anything! It was actually a rather clever marketing campaign really, particularly as even Nan (who generally turns off when anything in an advertisement mentions ‘www’) noticed it. I know she noticed it because several days later as she sat puzzling over a crossword she sought my assistance.

‘Stacey?’ she asked.

‘Yes, Nan?’

‘You’ve got one of them computer things haven’t you?’

‘Yes Nan.’

‘Ok, can you get hold of that Jeeves fellow from that telly ad? I need help with my crossword.’

Yes, it seems Nan genuinely thought that Internet users have unrestricted access to a very knowledgeable gentleman by the name of Jeeves and that whenever I wanted to know anything I could simply switch on my computer and ‘talk’ to the butler himself, personally.

Google is a T-Shirt Printing Business

When I first began working in SEO and online marketing, I was trying to explain the concept to my Nan. I started by explaining search engines and why someone would want to ‘rank’ within them. However, I was interrupted in the middle of my very ‘back to basics’ explanation of Google.

‘Google?’ she began, ‘They make T-shirts, don’t they?’

Despite my insistence that Google isn’t a local t-shirt printing company, I think she still believes that they are… which I suppose by default means that if anyone asks what her Grand Daughter does for a living, there’s a very real chance she’ll reply, “Gets things on T-shirts.” Yes, honest, I’m a T-shirt printer!

Facebook Makes People Get Divorced

Now, while there is no arguing with the fact that some people have divorced as a result of an encounter they’ve had with someone they met or got back in touch with through Facebook, I’m not sure it’s fair to assume that Facebook is singlehandedly responsible for as many divorces as my Nan seems to think it is. Of course, she’s basing her in depth knowledge of the platform on one or two dodgy articles she’s read in tabloid newspapers. But there’s no arguing with Nan. Her opinion is gold. My Auntie and I were having a discussion in my Nan’s house a few months back. She had recently joined Facebook and having previously been as much of a novice as Nan, was asking for a little help getting to grips with it.

‘Can you come round to my house when you get chance,’ she asked me, ‘and help me out with Facebook?’

‘Facebook?’ Nan piped in. ‘What are you looking at that for? You’re not even married.’

‘What’s that got to do with anything?’ my Auntie enquired.

‘Well that’s a thing on the Internet for married people who want mistresses or toyboys isn’t it?’

I don’t think she’ll be signing up for a profile anytime time soon.

The Internet Closes at 5

Several months ago I was sitting in my Nan’s house (minding my own business) and when I decided to get the laptop out and enjoy some early evening online shopping time.

‘What are you doing?’ she asked me as I turned my laptop on (It’s worth noting that as far as my Nan is concerned, if your eyes aren’t on the TV, you must be up to something).

‘Shopping.’

‘On that internet thingie?’

‘Yep.’

‘You’re too late, love. It’s nearly seven now. Shops shut ages ago.’

Even after explaining to her that Internet shops don’t really work like that and that they are open 24 hours, she simply accused the retailers of ‘exploiting their staff,’ by making them work day and night. I stopped trying to explain right there.

So you’re unlikely to ever see my Nan on Facebook – she’s not in the market for a toyboy. She’s not keen on Google because she prefers long sleeved sweaters to t-shirts and she remains one of the tiny minority who still insist on booking their travel in a High Street Travel Agency. Apparently online shopping is all a big conspiracy.

So while we talk and blog and debate the progress of technology and the web, it might be worth remembering that the Internet revolution hasn’t quite happened for everyone yet!

Stacey is from Manchester, UK and works in online marketing and SEO (that t-shirt printing business, right?) for Tecmark: SEO Liverpool. She’s regularly sniffing around the My Blog Guest forums! You can follow Stacey on Twitter!

The two things most difficult to write are humor and satire. Humor writing can be targeted to a specific audience, in which case not everyone is expected to get the joke. Broad-based humor is not so forgiving; Invariably someone will be offended. In other words, you might get away with calling obese people fat if your audience is skinny, just don’t make a habit of saying things like that in public.

Satire is the most difficult of all things to write. The target is most specific and some people will be offended. That’s life. The degree of resentment that can be caused is in direct correlation to the writer’s talent for satire. Age has a lot to do with this as well; parents don’t like kids to satirize life, especially when the kids have not lived long enough to have the wisdom that comes with age.

Attacking an entire generation as “doomed”, “too old to give a damn” is not satire, or “tongue in cheek.” Accusations of Cognitive lock-in (My generation called this the RC factor, resistance to change) is anything but objective – it is an indictment of baby-boomers stuck in some fixed time period, unable to comprehend technology. I don’t believe this is true.

Regardless of age, change is not an easy thing to accept. But to say, “…despite logic, these old farts will prefer to do things the old way even if there are new and objectively ‘better” ways of doing the same thing” is to pigeon-hole the people who made it possible to write this as afflicted with dementia. Our kids generation may be using the technology, but we invented it.

Until a couple of years ago I owned a computer company. Besides consulting, designing and implementing networks in the health-care industry, I taught employees basic computer skills. Two aspects of this business always held true: Interest in learning and general ability to learn. Age was never a factor.

I’m not going to say that age has no bearing on using the Internet. Of course it does. Conversely, the ability to thumb an iPhone to text, or use social networking sites does not make a technology expert. Regardless of age, most people do not know how to effectively use Facebook or Twitter – 80% of the population doesn’t know what a web browser is.

At some point all of us will use some part of technology we don’t understand. Most of us drive cars – how many embedded systems are in the average car made today? Who cares, we drive it and that’s all we need to know. Us old farts may look stupid to youngsters, but consider how you look to us.

I’ve written around 300-400 blog posts in the last 5 years. Blogging is cyclic for me; sometimes on my own blogs, sometimes a corporate blog, sometimes on multi-author industry blogs. I love to analyze and theorize, and blogging helps me think through in depth about ideas that occur to me in the course of work. I tend to turn those into lists of useful tips and I try to make them funny. I use quality images (often creative commons attribution license images from flickr) and create my own SmartArt charts and graphs to add value.

I started with my first blog back in 2004 when I was an acupuncturist. Before that I used to write alternative medicine articles for my own static HTML site. Later I created blogs about my original music, basketball, and comedy. I really hit my blogging stride with my AdWords consulting blog in 2005, which has a total of 122 posts.

I helped get the blog at my agency, Fuel Interactive, off the ground in 2008 with 67 posts, some of which were nominated for the SEMMY Awards. One came in second place in 2009 in the PPC category.

I started getting asked to guest blog in 2008 after I began publicizing my blog posts via Twitter and Sphinn. Around the same time I was interviewed a lot via email and phone. And I started speaking at search conferences about PPC. Meanwhile I was also blogging about social media on another new blog, and started speaking about that at conferences too.

I hung out with Loren Baker of Search Engine Journal at the ScarySEO conference and next thing I knew I was writing for them about PPC. I wrote about 27 weekly posts before I ran out of stuff to say. That blog is particularly exciting to write for because it shows up in Google News. I ran into Jeff Quipp at the SMX Local conference and emailed a bit with Ruud Hein, both of Search Engine People, and ended up blogging for them, mainly about Social Media. Recently, at PubCon, I talked to the editor of Search Engine Land- so, who knows, maybe one day I’ll be blogging for all three of the biggest search blogs in the industry! I’d love to blog for Mashable, but for whatever reason haven’t been able to break into that group. Maybe you know someone and can put a good word in for me.

Here are some of the benefits of guest blogging:

Raises your game

Increases your reach and influence

Leads to connections and jobs/work

Boosts your repuation and resume

Brings more traffic to your sites and blogs

Yields valuable inbound links that increase your search rankings

And a few tips for getting there:

Improve your writing with Strunk & White’s Elements of Style

Write Digg-Style blog post titles

Start with an idea and a title before writing

Spend at least 25% of your time on the blog post title

Use images to make it look professional (breaking that rule here)

Use section headers to break it up

Publicize your posts via Twitter and social voting sites (Digg/Sphinn/StumbleUpon)

Network with industry peers and gurus

Ask editors if you can guest blog (duh!)

Hope that helps you in your guest blogging journey!

By the age of 8, I should have been keen on the idea that my parents’ generation was doomed. While they barely trusted me to pick out my outfit, I certainly could not trust them with the TV, VCR, or any other device that had buttons and required electricity. I guess I just mistook them for being stubborn at the time.

Now, at age 24, I realize they may have been at a disadvantage during the advent of the Internet. Right now, these “Silver Surfers” (defined as baby boomers ages 45 to 63) make up roughly 30.9% of the total online population according to a study conducted by eMarketer. Senior citizens over the age of 65, on the other hand, make up less than 10%.Why the disparity? I believe the Silver Surfer generation was at the perfect age when the Internet was becoming hip. While the still had the desire to be cool, the generation above was too old to give a damn.

I remember the day my father brought home this top-of-the-line unwieldy box made by Dell. Most likely swindled by some nerdy commission-based employee at Circuit City, he was nonetheless proud of himself. I mean, this thing had a 56k modem that allowed us to connect to the Internet and check e-mail. My parents were now HIP! The cacophony of beeps and static noises it spewed forth as our family huddled around and watched all three stages of the AOL sign in screen was magical.

“Welcome…You’ve got Mail”

“Hot damn!!!” said my father, smitten with his purchase. But the celebration was short-lived:

“Ok…so how do I do this crap? What is all this stuff?” hoping that if he squinted hard enough at the intimidating colors and animations, the answer would appear.

“Click on the mailbox picture Dad….duh!” I exclaimed.

After that swift sucker-punch to his ego, he cautiously clicked the icon to reveal our first “Welcome to AOL” email. We were in love. We were cool, we were WITH IT! Eventually, my parents got the hang of it, and my mom actually became quite the e-mail hipster. The Internet was a new and fascinating place, capable of bringing us news, forwarded jokes, and information from all over the world.

NOW PAUSE.

This snapshot of the Internet, as it was in 1998 with its simple email and browser capabilities, is still what many old people think the Internet is and should be. I will call it the OlderNet for the sake of this post. With the boom in technological advancement over the past decade or so, these Silver Surfers are having trouble staying on the wave. However, as they approach a whopping 1/3 of the active users on the Internet, they are too just hard to ignore. As an Internet marketer and social media researcher, it is of huge importance that I understand and cater to their paradigm. Let’s take a look:

Cognitive lock-in, a psychological term for the idioms “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” and “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” plagues their generation. They became comfortable with the OlderNet. It worked just fine. Now there are blogs, RSS feeds, social networks, streaming videos, and other advancements that make the acquisition and distribution of information faster and simpler.

But that doesn’t matter. The theory of cognitive lock-in suggests that, despite logic, these old farts will prefer to do things the old way even if there are new and objectively ‘better” ways of doing the same thing. We are all guilty of this to a degree. Everybody, regardless of age or gender, will exhibit signs of attachment to past successful behavior. This is the crux of building and maintaining a brand image, and marketers know this. Once they hook you, it is easy sailing. I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything other than Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, Heinz Ketchup, or Chef Boyardee soups in my life. Sure, there are probably better soups than Beefaroni, but I don’t really care, Beefaroni has always gotten the job done.

But here is the kicker…why are the generations below our beloved Silver Surfers not stuck in a state of cognitive lock-in when it comes to technology? The younger generations have embraced Web 2.0’s social networks, wiki’s, video streaming sites, blogs, and forums. However, the majority of Silver Surfers are still fine snacking on the OlderNet’s digital Beefaroni. If we rewind back to the story of my dad trying to figure out AOL (which, btw, my parents still refer to the Internet as “AOL”), I think it will shed light on the root of the problem:

They are afraid of technology.

There, I said it! Bin-Laden, identity thieves, and the Poltergeist are lurking behind every corner, waiting for them to make that fatal click. Meanwhile, the younger generations are willing to press any button, move any file, and sign up for random sites because all because we were introduced to advanced technology at an age where curiosity outweighed caution. If we pressed too many buttons, we’d just reboot. If that didn’t work, then we would reboot again, or hit it, or blow on it. We didn’t care; the computer was our slave, not the other way around. By using this trial-and-error mentality toward technology and computers, we began to pick up on patterns, and actually figured out how and why the computer did what it did. It was not magical, it was not out to get us, and it was certainly not perfect. It is this mentality that continues to encourage younger generations to explore the current and evolving trends of the web.

Unfortunately, there is little that can be done to change the way the Silver Surfers behave. The old idioms have withstood the test of time for a reason. Sure, not EVERY old fart is afraid, and there are hundreds of brave ones signing up for Facebook every day. And yes, they are awkward and unwanted but you still have to respect them for trying.

So I propose a roast. Help share your favorite Silver Surfer anecdotes, commonalities, and pet peeves. I am sure you can think of something. And to any old people that happened to find this, I encourage you to defend yourself. Happy surfing!

So please go ahead and join: MyBlogGuest

(photo by insunlight)

New Audience: Guest posting will open up your blog to a new audience that may not have previously read your work. As long as you write something that catches their interest, they will curiously click through to your blog to see what else you have to offer.

More RSS Subscribers: Once they click through to your blog, if visitors find information that is either informative, entertaining and/or useful, they will most likely subscribe to your RSS feed to see what you are going to publish in the future. Keep in mind that in order to draw visitors (and potential RSS subscribers) to your blog, you need to write an amazing guest post that piques their interest.

Win-Win Situation: When it comes to guest blogging, both bloggers benefit from this arrangement. The guest blogger gets to expose their content to a new audience, while the other blogger gets a great free piece of exclusive content to publish.

Networking: Since a good guest blogger should be replying to reader comments, this is a great opportunity to start conversations with new readers. Not only can you establish new relationships through comments, but other people’s thoughts can also be a great tool for thinking of new topics for your future posts.

Fresh Perspective: If you are normally a solo blogger, then having a guest blogger is a great way to add a fresh perspective to your blog. This works even better if the guest blogger has a slightly different area of expertise that they can share with your readers.

(photo by morphyne)

Different Social Networks and Reach: Each of the bloggers may utilize different social networks, and have varying amounts of reach on each one. For example, my main social networks are on Twitter, StumbleUpon, Facebook and Blog Catalogue. Although I don’t have the strongest presence on Digg, I can work with a guest blogger that does (but doesn’t necessarily have a strong StumbleUpon profile). Since we will both be trying to promote each guest post through our various social networks, our combined efforts will give our content a farther reach.

This combined effort creates what I like to call “Social Media Synergy”. If you want to see “Social Media Synergy” in action, just check your analytics program a day or two after guest posting, and I know that you will be happy with the increase in traffic that you see.

Link Building: Although this last one is pretty obvious, it’s definitely a nice benefit of guest posting. Like my bio below, you can include some information about yourself (along with a link or two back to your blog and website), and this will provide you with a quality backlink to help your SEO efforts.

If you know of other benefits of guest posting, please let Ann and I know by leaving a comment!

This is a guest post by Gerald Weber.
Guest posting (contributing to other blogs with the link back – usually in the “About the author” section) is the great way to:

build backlinks;

attract audience (probably interested in neighboring niches);

build relationships with other bloggers, etc

I’ve been recently involved in a number of guest posts throughout different-niche blogs and was struck by some common unethical (as I see it) behavior:

My posts were edited (without even letting me know): links deleted and/or nofollowed;

[even more irritating] The post was published untouched and edited a few days later (probably for me to never take notice of that);

I was never replied back after the post had been received and even published (I found out about the published post from referrals).

I’ve been a displeased (to make it sound softer) by this behavior as I always considered a guest post to still be my property: a blogger should either refuse to publish overall or publish it as it is.

But probably I am wrong? Am I granting the editing rights when sending the guest post to the blogger and allowing to publish it at his blog?

Ok, it’s been more than 6 months since I started blogging. This was something completely new and overwhelming for me (and while I can’t afford blogging too often here, I am a frequent contributer at SEJ). And now after some time passed, I can look back to define best tactics that helped me a bunch.

It is essential to note that all of these tactics are very personal – meaning that’s what helped me when I was starting. It is in no way universally true for everyone but still can be much help for those who struggle to understand how to succeed.

1. Turn your weak points into the strong ones. I’ve briefly mentioned a few times that I blog in a foreign language. Yep, English is a foreign language to me; Russian is my native one. But I run the US-based business and am thus forced to blog and communicate in English. What does it mean for me? Writing a blog post takes me much more time than it would have taken a native speaker because I need to think thoroughly over each word and phrase. Thus I can’t afford writing long articles full of thoughts and considerations. I write short laconic posts trying to compensate this by providing actionable advice, useful screenshots, tables and lists. This has become my selling point.

2. Organize yourself, your work process and your resources. When you regularly blog and try to constantly grow your knowledge, you daily come across plenty of new links and useful thoughts. If you fail to organize this wealth of material, you will soon end up wasting plenty of time trying to remember where you saw this post or heard that news. I have in detail described my method of organization in one of my SEOmoz/ Youmoz posts. Of course, I don’t encourage you to copy this tactic. Make up your own that will suit you personally. This can be Excel tables, mind mapping, or whatever you prefer. The main thing is that organization is the key to effective working and achieving success in what you are doing.

3. Openly share all your knowledge. It is dumb to think that once you share some piece of knowledge, someone can turn it against you or become your competitor. No matter how much you share, you will always remain unique with your own style of working, structure of thoughts and experience. Of course, some things just cannot be shared (due to privacy policy, NDA contracts with clients, etc) but if you share something truly useful and valuable, you will quickly achieve recognition and hence success.
